Oro Valley sits at 2,600 to 3,000 feet in Pima County on the northwest side of Tucson, built into intact Sonoran Desert between the Santa Catalina Mountains and the Tortolitas. Nearly every lot in Rancho Vistoso, La Reserve, Canada Hills, Copper Creek and Stone Canyon borders native desert, a wash or a golf course, with block walls, boulders, pools and cholla and saguaro on the lot line. That is bark scorpion, pack rat, kissing bug, black widow and Africanized bee habitat, with rattlesnakes near the washes in summer, and the scorpion pressure is among the heaviest in southern Arizona.
The housing is 1980s to 2010s stucco and block, much of it in HOA and gated communities with shared block walls and common area landscaping. Sun City Oro Valley and the 55 and over sections along Rancho Vistoso Boulevard hold homes empty from May through October, so summer vacant home programs with gate access and reporting are common. Pack rat nests in the cholla and boulder piles chew vehicle wiring and carry kissing bugs that come to porch lights on monsoon nights, and Africanized bee swarms settle into saguaro cavities, irrigation boxes and wall voids each spring and fall.
Desert subterranean termites are under the whole valley, and the golf course irrigation and drip lines against the foundation keep colonies close to the slab. Oro Valley Marketplace, the resorts at the base of the Catalinas and the restaurants along Oracle Road run under Pima County Health Department inspection rules. Summer heat and the July monsoon drive the calls, led by scorpions, pack rats and kissing bugs, bees, termites and vacant home service.
