Marana is a fast growing town in Pima County northwest of Tucson, split between the Santa Cruz River farmland along I-10 at about 2,000 feet and the Tortolita Mountain foothills rising to 3,000 feet. The foothills side, Dove Mountain, Saguaro Ranch and the lots along Tangerine Road, is intact Sonoran Desert with boulders, saguaros, washes and block walls on large lots, and that is heavy bark scorpion, pack rat, kissing bug, black widow and Africanized bee habitat, with rattlesnakes near the washes in summer. The Ritz-Carlton area and the golf communities there run monthly scorpion service through the warm months.
The river side is a different job. Continental Ranch, Continental Reserve, Gladden Farms and the old town of Marana along the railroad are stucco tract homes on former cotton and pecan land where the deep soil holds moisture and keeps desert subterranean termite colonies close to the slab. The fields that remain along the Santa Cruz send field mice, crickets, grasshoppers and flies into bordering subdivisions each fall and after harvest, and the river corridor adds mosquitoes in monsoon season. Bark scorpions are lighter on the flat farmland but settle into pool pads and weep holes once they arrive.
Marana Regional Airport, the Tucson Premium Outlets, the distribution warehouses along I-10 and the Tangerine Road commercial corridor run under Pima County Health Department inspection rules. Summer heat and the July monsoon drive the calls, led by scorpions and pack rats in the foothills, termites and field pests on the river side, and bees on block walls townwide.
