Sierra Vista sits at about 4,600 feet in Cochise County at the base of the Huachuca Mountains, in high desert grassland rather than saguaro desert, and it gets one of the strongest monsoons in the state. From July through September the calls are dominated by what the rain brings out: kissing bugs from pack rat nests at porch lights, tarantulas and sun spiders crossing patios, ants flooded out of the grassland, sewer roaches through drains, and beetles and moths at every window. Bark scorpions are present but lighter than Tucson, mostly on the rockier lots toward the mountain and in Carr Canyon and Ramsey Canyon side neighborhoods.
Sierra Vista is a military town built around Fort Huachuca, and much of the housing is 1960s to 1990s ranch homes and rentals that turn over with every assignment, plus newer stucco subdivisions on the east and south side along Highway 92 and toward Hereford. Older homes have slab edge gaps, unscreened vents and aging plumbing that Turkestan roaches, pack rats and mice use, and the rentals generate move in inspections, bed bug checks and full treatments before furniture goes in. Pack rats nest in the grassland edges and the yucca and mesquite on larger lots, chew vehicle wiring, and are the kissing bug source. Desert subterranean termites are common in the lower ground and drywood termites show up in older wood.
Winters are cold enough for snow and push mice into garages and crawl spaces from November on. The Fry Boulevard retail corridor, the hotels serving the fort and the restaurants downtown run under Cochise County Health and Social Services inspection rules. The calendar runs monsoon insect season, fall pack rat and mouse season, and spring bee swarms, with quarterly or bi monthly service common.
