Sahuarita sits at about 2,700 feet in Pima County on the Santa Cruz River south of Tucson, between the Green Valley pecan groves and the Santa Rita Mountains, and nearly all of it was built after 2000. Rancho Sahuarita, Madera Highlands, Quail Creek, Entrada and the subdivisions along Sahuarita Road and Nogales Highway are stucco tract homes with block walls, granite yards and pools on land that was pecan orchard, farmland or open desert, and the pests are the ones that come with that: bark scorpions displaced into the block walls and pool pads, black widows at the weep holes, and crickets and roof rats coming out of the pecan groves along the river each fall.
The east side toward the Santa Rita foothills, Madera Highlands and the lots along Madera Canyon Road, is desert edge with pack rats in the cholla and mesquite, kissing bugs off their nests at porch lights in monsoon season, Africanized bee swarms in spring and fall and rattlesnakes near the washes. Quail Creek is a large 55 and over community with homes empty through summer, so summer vacant programs and fall open up inspections are common. The river corridor and Sahuarita Lake add mosquitoes in monsoon season, and desert subterranean termites are under the whole valley, with the old orchard soil keeping colonies close to the slab.
The copper mine tailings on the west side of I-19 and the mine workforce give Sahuarita a rental market with move in treatments, and the restaurants and retail along Sahuarita Road fall under Pima County Health Department inspection rules. Summer heat and one of the strongest monsoons in the state drive the calls, led by scorpions, pack rats and kissing bugs, termites, crickets from the groves and vacant home service.
