Buckeye is the far Southwest Valley in Maricopa County at about 890 feet, an old farm town on the Gila River that became one of the fastest growing cities in the country after 2005. The growth sits in two places. North of I-10, Verrado, Tartesso, Festival Ranch and Sundance were graded out of the desert at the foot of the White Tank Mountains, and those lots carry displaced bark scorpions in the block walls and pool pads, pack rats in the washes, kissing bugs, black widows and Africanized bee swarms. Victory at Verrado adds a 55 and over section with homes empty in summer.
South of I-10 and along the Gila River the city is still working agricultural land: cotton, alfalfa, dairies and feedlots around the old downtown on Monroe Avenue and the neighborhoods off Miller Road. Homes there get field mice, crickets, grasshoppers and flies moving in from the fields each fall and after harvest, and the dairies on the south side create fly pressure that Verrado never sees. The older housing near downtown is 1950s to 1980s with mature trees, which brings roof rats and sewer roaches through drains in monsoon season.
Nearly every home in Buckeye is under 20 years old, so termite pretreatment records, builder warranties and drip irrigation run against new stem walls are the termite conversation, and the state TARF record is checked before any new treatment is proposed. Summer heat above 110 degrees and the July monsoon drive the calls, led by scorpions in the new subdivisions, field pests near the farms, termites and ants.
